An international driving permit or international driving license is a translation of a home country's original driver's license that allows them to drive in foreign jurisdictions that recognize the document.
There have been 3 conventions on road traffic ratified by various countries related to international driving permits. These are the *1926 Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic*, *1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic*, and *1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic*. Some major countries that have not ratified the 1969 Vienna convention are the United States, Canada, Ireland, China, and Malaysia.
## Getting an International Driving Permit in the US
There are only 2 private entities that have been authorized by the US Department of State to handle International Driving Permits, or _IDPs_. These are the American Automobile Association (_AAA_) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (_AATA_). However, the AATA has stopped issuing IDPs, so AAA is the best option for now.
